Deputy Inspector Epoxy / Special Inspection Information

If you need a Special Inspection by a Deputy Inspector for Epoxy Installed Bolts, or Epoxy Installed Rebar Dowels, Shearwall Nailing, Concrete placement or more on your construction project, you have come to the right place!

For epoxy inspections, a Deputy Inspector will need to be on your project to verify the hole depth and diameter, the cleanness of the hole, and the type of the epoxy that you are using including batch number and expiration date. Also, except for certain situations, a Deputy Inspector does not need to be on the job while you are drilling the holes.

All of the above listed items must be in accordance with the approved plans, and also the local Building and Safety Department's requirements.

Some basic tips to help you with epoxying rebar dowels or bolts:

1)- Always verify that the epoxy you are using is what is called out for on the approved plans. Certain epoxies that used to be acceptable are no longer allowed in L.A. City.

2)- Always check the expiration date of the epoxy. I have seen expired epoxy that was just purchased the same day.

3)- Most epoxy manufacturer's require that you drill your hole 1/16" - 1/8" greater than the size of the bolt or rebar that you are epoxying. This is required by manufacturers to make sure that there is room in the hole so enough epoxy can surround the rod.

4)- Always use compressed air and a hose that reaches the bottom of the hole to clean it out. Blowing air from the top of the hole without a hose that reaches the bottom will just push the debris to the bottom instead of blowing it up and out. Vacuums don't work well either.

5)- It is acceptable if the hole is damp, as long as any standing water has been blown out.

Keep these tips in mind when getting ready to install any hold downs, anchor bolts, or rebar dowels and the inspection should be fine.
