SIMPSON SET XP vs. SET 3G EPOXY
by John Lorenzo Deputy InspectorThere is some confusion about the inabilty to locate Simpson SET XP epoxy lately, and if there is a replacement?
The answer is that Simpson has discontinued their line of SET XP Epoxy, and replaced it with their new line of SET 3G Epoxy.
Simpson SET 3G Epoxy is a direct replacement of the SET XP and is approved for use under ICC ESR-4057 Evaluation Report.
So what's the difference between the old XP epoxy and the new 3G epoxy?
According to Simpson's website, "The average bond strength used to determine the adhesive (pullout) design strength of SET-3G for gravity load resistance in cracked concrete is roughly 200% greater than that of SET-XP".
Simpson SET 3G is also approved for lower temperature installation (40*F instead of 50* for SET XP).
Simpson changed the formula in order to meet new qualification standards of testing in concrete temperatures of 110*F instead of the older standard of 75*F.
If your plans call out for SET XP Epoxy and you still have some on hand it is ok to use as long as it hasn't past the expiration date, but going forward SET 3G will be what you want to use as long as your project's engineer / architect isn't requiring a specific brand i.e. Hilti, etc.)
